Shanon and I headed to our favorite Chinese buffet yesterday and, like all the Chinese buffets we’ve ever been to, it just keeps getting worse every time we go back.  The place does have one redeeming quality.  There’s a sushi bar and amazing , all you can eat, veggie sushi that would cost a ton of cash anywhere else.

We went on a whim, so Shannon worried she was a little under dressed, but one step into the place told us that anything goes.

We were greeted by Captain Claw and the amazing idea that a pirate could have a toy grabbing claw on his hand!

Shannon and I had a great Labor Day weeked.  We finished X-Files Season One (Tooms!!!!), ate our first Indian food out here (wonderful!), and hung out in coffee houses reading for most of it.

After church on Sunday we went to Ballard Sunday Market, which was a bit of let down.  It wasn’t really any bigger than the Edmonds’ Market.

But, on the way, we stopped by Trophy Cupcakes!

After the market we ate Thai in Greenlake at a place called Thai Ocean.  In the Seattle area, Thai places are everywhere, like Chinese back in IL.

Thai Ocean was great, but it was a strange place.  We sat surrounded by fleshy pink walls that made us feel like we were in the belly of the beast.  Shannon went to bathroom and came back smiling.

She told me to go have a look.  I whipped out the camera and headed back there (no, I have no inhibitions about stepping into the women’s restroom).

The bathroom was covered in hundreds of dead flowers making the scent of the room sickening sweet.

Thank God the food was amazing!

Yesterday we had killer Crepes at Red Twig, right here in Edmonds.  Mine was a savory crepe with spinach, mushrooms, and goat cheese (We are in love with Goat Cheese right now) and Shannon got the apple and cinnamon.

My Birthday so far… August 26, 2008

I have worked out, ate breakfast, listened to a Horror Etc. podcast, slept some more, replied to Birthday wishes from friends on Facebook and Myspace, worked on Axia stuff, and watched 24.

I’ve been pretty lazy so far.

Shannon is taking me to Olive Garden for dinner. Yes, I know that i live in a place with many other choices, but I want my endless pasta bowel, salad, and bread sticks.

Shannon also mentioned an Italian Margarita.

I am very, very excited!

Birthday Celebration (Day 1) August 25, 2008

The Weiss holiday season starts this week.  My birthday is tomorrow, our anniversary is next week, and Shannon’s b-day is a few weeks later.

We started celebrating this weekend.  My in-laws sent me some cash, so I took my wife out for lunch at California Pizza Kitchen.  We had the Roasted Peppers and Egg Plant with Goat Cheese pizza.  It was wonderful.

Then, we slid over to Alderwood Mall for my birthday present from my good friend Cold Stone Creamery.  No body that lives near a Cold Stone could ever feel unloved on their birthday.  A free Love It size Icecream.  I chose Cake Bater Icecream with Yellow Cake and Crunch Bar.

Oh, and Shannon snapped this fruity picture of me enjoying my treat.

My New Favorite Breakfast – Egg Sandwich with Veggie Bacon July 21, 2008

- Fry a free range chicken egg and break the yoke

- microwave two pieces of veggie bacon

- toast two pieces of bread and spread a healthy amount of veganese mayo on each side

- place the egg and bacon and salt to taste.

- I add cheese when I have it.

My dad even liked it.  One of the few times he didn’t complain about eating veggies all the time (which of course was crap, since every time we ate out he ate meat.

A Week with Baby (7 weeks/7 foods) April 28, 2008

I’ve been thinking about writing a post a week linking the the age of the baby to something fun. Of course, these lists will get really long as the time goes by, but I find myself (in my excitement) linking everything to the baby in one way or another.

This week I’m thinking about food. I’ve had food on the mind for a few reasons. First, Shannon has already started on some wonderful combinations. We’ve had the Fazoli’s days, and the night we had cheese stix, baked beans, and green beans.

Second, since we have been talking about raising the baby vegetarian, I’ve been reading a lot about what babies can eat.

Andrew F. Smith, who teaches culinary history at the New School in New York states in an article from a 2006 issue of a NY Times: “Historically, there was no such thing as children’s food… Babies would eat what adults ate, chopped up, until Gerber created baby food in 1927.”

Now, our baby won’t be eating the same food as us for a pretty long time (this says that you should wait until the baby is 6 months before adding some spice to their diet), but there are many things I can’t wait for her to try.

Growing up eight miles south of nowhere, IL made my palate weak and my taste buds a little dead. My parents had a few hits that I will pass on, but, for the most part, I’ve had get out there and fall in love with food all on my own. So, I want my kids to have kick butt food at the table every night.

This list is by no means all the food I love, but they are my loves of the moment:

1. Seitan Vindaloo – Vindaloo has to be my favorite Indian dish by far. I have been trying to master this at home for a long time, so I’m glad I still have time to work on it.  It’s can be pretty spicy, but I’ll prepare the way with these Indian Baby Food Recipes.

2. Thai Green/Red Curry – When I was young, I never would have hated the idea of coconut milk. Now, I love this stuff. My home version is better than most of the places I have gotten it here in the Mid-West (A place in B-ton, IN beats me by adding amazing baby eggplant.

3. Sweet potato fries – I actually just found out that I love sweet potatoes after years being mortal enemies. Shannon’s sweet potato fries is the number one reason.

4. Asparagus – Some people are amazed when I tell them that asparagus grew wild along the roads around my house. My parents would have this green vegetable at almost every meal during the summer months and I still love it today.

5. Fried Zucchini and Green Tomatoes – Another staple around the Weiss farm that I haven’t had enough of since. I have the hardest time not smoking up the whole house.

6. Veggies Fajitas – I love fajitas!  There is something awesome about taking any veggie you want, spicing it up, maybe adding some seitan (Seitan is the greatest foodstuff ever), and tossing them on a shell with some soy sour cream (a million times better than real sour cream – I can’t believe it, but it’s true!)

7. Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese - The best winter day – feel good meal ever.  I have actually had people rave about my grilled cheese, but I don’t really do anything that special.   I actually need to get a good tomato soup recipe.  If anyone has one, send it my way.

I know there are more and I should have saved this list for a later week.  Oh well, maybe I’ll revisit it.  I know I will have to have a restaurant list at some point.

Fair Food

Is it just me or has fair food really went down hill in the last few years. The scary Marion fair has set up outside the mall, so I stopped by for some taffy, a lemon shake-up, and the scariest elephant ear that I have ever eaten.

My shake-up tasted like sugar water and my elephant ear was a sheet of greased dough.

Now, I have probably gained a pound and I want to throw-up.

Maybe I’m getting too old for this stuff!
