I really am going to try and start posting on this blog again.  I haven’t abandon it.  It’s just that Kenley (my lovely daughter) has been keeping me crazy busy.  Since her birth, I have finished my summer quarter teaching (though I still have my online classes) and I am home.

That’s right!  I’m being Mr. Mom.  My goal was to start posting everyday of the break (which really started yesterday since I had finals week and grading).

Yesterday, as some of my Twitter readers know, Gizmo (our once fuzzy cat), Kenley, and I headed over to the West side (Edmonds, WA) so that the boys could get hair cuts.  Gizmo gets his hair cut at the amazing City Kitty.  In Illinois, Gizmo would get so crazy that the cat groomers would want to put him to sleep just so they wouldn’t have to deal with him.  Adrianne is so good with him and actually thinks he is a really sweet cat (which is complete news to us.  He is usually a stinker).

Kenley was wonderful.  After we dropped Gizmo off, we went down to the Edmonds Waterfront.  I fed her lunch looking out over the sound.  I can’t wait to take her down there when she’s old enough to play in the sand and water.  As I said in my Twitter, I was 23 when I first saw the ocean (a story I should relate sometime), so I was pretty happy to have her there and so thankful that we live in this beautiful place.  I miss my friends and family from IL, but I will never miss IL.  I know Kenley wont remember our time at the beach, but I will.

Yesterday was also Shannon and my two-year anniversary.  Who would have thought that our whirlwind romance and marriage would take us all the places we’ve been.  I am so happy to have such a strong and amazing (not to mention – drop dead gorgeous) woman with me.  I am truly blessed.  We’re celebrating our anniversary tomorrow, so I will have more to update about later.

Actual email I just sent to my hometown paper:

Hey Scott,

Can you direct me to or put the police beat from The Bridgeport Leader in the online edition? It is the best way for me to keep track of my friends and family (I’m laughing, but I’m not really kidding.)

Thanks,

Buck

My good friend Korah, form the old stomping ground of Eastern Illinois University stopped by for a visit last night.  We had a great time showing her and her friend Darren around Edmonds, eating at the local Thai place, and watching the sun go down at the beach.

Korah and Darren at Thai Cottage

It was wonderful to hear about her travels since last I saw her, and to reminisce about the ole EFT, which (for those of you who know it) has long been scattered to the wind.

Walking into the Sunset

I was really thinking that one of the SIU bunch would be the first one out, since MLA is down the coast this year.   But, the dam has broken folks, come on west and have a taste of the good life.

The Check June 23, 2008

All last week I was negotiating with a company that owed us some money, hoping to get it from them before we moved.  Near the end of the day on Thursday they passed me a check.  That night, Shannon and I went for a run.  I usually leave my car unlocked in the drive way, so that we can use the garage door opener to get back in the house.

After the run, I popped the garage from the car and noticed that the check was in the console between the seats.  I thought about picking it up or locking the car, but I wondered for a moment where I had left my keys.  I left the car unlocked and with the full intention of returning once I had found my keys, headed inside.

As you may have already deduced, I never made it back out to lock the car.

I went out at 7am the next morning to get the check and it was gone.  I freaked.  This was a big money item and I had lost it.  My first thought was that someone had stolen it, but who would steal a check?  What could you even do with it?

Plus, all the change and a few bills that were in my ashtray were still there.  My FM turner for my MP3 player was still there.  I searched the car thoroughly, knowing how easily fate could have blown the check between the seats just to mess with me.  Nothing… I got out and went to Shannon’s car.  Her doors opened right up.  She hadn’t locked her’s either.

Sitting right there in front of me was our XM radio.  There was no way that someone stopped by to steal my check and had left this gem still hanging from the dash.  I headed inside and told Shannon what was going on.  Her advice was simple.  Tear everything apart until I found that check.

After she went to work, I dug through every place that I could have ever left that check, but it was no where to be found.  Around 9am, after searching the car for a 3rd time, I called the business and asked them to cancel the check and write me a new one.

I told them that the check was stolen.  It had to be stolen.  As crazy as that sounds.  Someone had to have stopped by my car and taken only the check, even though there were things around he or she could actually get money from.  It was a hard pill to swallow, but I knew I was right.

It took all day, but the business finally got me a new check.  I took it straight to the bank and dropped it in the deposit box.

The old check was gone, but no thief would ever be able to get the cash.

Three days go by, we head up north to a family reunion and then to Cape Girardeau for a wedding reception.  Then, a few hours after getting home Sunday night, I get a call.  It’s the Herrin Police department.

They arrested a mail thief in Herrin on Saturday.  In his possession was a check with my name on it.  “Really,” I tell the officer.  “But, that check wasn’t in the mail.  It was in my car.”

The officer then tells me that the theif’s charges just went from a small misdemeanor to a felony due to stealing my check.

I meet the cop at in the parking lot of the local bowling alley and, like a reverse drug deal, he traded me the check for a written statement.

At the end, I asked the cop how he tracked me down.  He only had my name and he got my cell phone number.  I couldn’t remember ever registering it with the police.

“Actually,” he said.  “I went to school with a guy that works for the business in question.  I called him up and he helped me get your number.”  He smiled: “It would have been easier if you had a criminal record.”

“Yeah,” I replied.  “You would have found my name in your database eventually and then my dad could have helped track me down.  He was the criminal in the family.”

“I myself…” I slapped on my Caruso shades, “like to keep them in check….”

Brent, David, and Shannon

My oldest and dearest friend, Brent came down to visit us this weekend.  On Thursday night we all went to see our local Frontier League Team, The Southern Illinois Miners.

Shannon and I aren’t much for baseball, but we do like beer and dippin dots.  Brent is a huge baseball fan and he likes young girls dancing around on dugouts (a staple of the Miner’s games).  Over all, it was a pretty great time.

The garage sale was pretty boring today. The one highlight-listening to The Smiths “Some Girls are Bigger than Others” while being surrounded by mid-west shopping moms and their daughters.

I kept waiting for one of them to say, “What is that horrible man talking about?” But, they just kept their heads down and their eyes on the merchandise.

Fair Food

Is it just me or has fair food really went down hill in the last few years. The scary Marion fair has set up outside the mall, so I stopped by for some taffy, a lemon shake-up, and the scariest elephant ear that I have ever eaten.

My shake-up tasted like sugar water and my elephant ear was a sheet of greased dough.

Now, I have probably gained a pound and I want to throw-up.

Maybe I’m getting too old for this stuff!

We were awaken on Friday by the 5.2 earthquake that hit an hour north of us.  It was actually a lot better than the blaring alarm that was set to go off a few minutes later.

We were getting up early to head north and tell our parents about the new baby.

The best thing about the whole affair was watching the local news coverage.  One of our highly intelligent newscasters asked Clint Mistlehorne, the weather specialist (that’s right, he is not credentialed enough to be a meteorologist),

“Clint, could this Earthquake have anything to do with the flooding we’ve had these past few weeks?”

I so wanted Clint to respond, “Well, since God couldn’t kill us all with the flood, he decided to try again!”

They then went on to take phone calls from locals who all said the exact same thing, except for a frightened old lady who kept saying “I’m all alone, I’m all alone.”  When the newscaster heard this he quickly reminded people to check on their neighbors stating, “Don’t let them be like this lady.”
